Learning Spanish for CFL exam is different from learning language for day to day work as a diplomat. Most of the time diplomats require language for daily conversation with locals,understanding the culture of the place,interpretation for senior officials during meetings, giving speeches,interviews or conducting press conferences.Ability to read newspapers,magazines and write e-mails and official communication.

CFL exam on the other hand is more theoretical where candidate is expected to write a Essay,short notes,making sentences using idioms and phrases and translation of text from Spanish to English and vice versa.

Strategy for mastering the language is to have strong base of grammar and vocabulary.First 6 months the concentration should be on what is taught in the classes and trying to learn the basics.Once the basics are learnt one can start working on one's own to increase listening comprehension and spoken fluency.

English to Spanish Translation

As the procession slowly moved along the narrow streets, it looked like a river of pale fire. On both sides were balconies, each filled with watching people.

 

Mientras que la procesión se movió lentamente a lo largo de las calles estrechas, parecía un río del fuego pálido. A ambos lados eran los balcones, cada uno llenado de mirar de la gente.

 

 

All at once a woman's voice sounded loudly and clearly; she was singing a improvised hymn. Other soon followed, echoed by deep voices of the crowed of people who lined the streets, taking off their hats as the procession reached them.

 

De repente la voz de una mujer sonó en voz alta y claramente; ella cantaba un himno improvisado. Otro pronto seguido, repetido por voces profundas del cantado de la gente que alineó las calles, quitando sus sombreros mientras que la procesión los alcanzó

 

Among the penitents walked Pepe, carrying a lighted candle, and, as soon as they recognized him, the bystanders exclaimed in wonder at seeing the bullfighter, their idol, walking bare foot with the rest. Then they remembered his wound and his long illness and realized that he was giving thanks for his recovery. 

 

 

Entre los penitentes Pepe andado, llevando una vela encendida, y, tan pronto como ellos lo reconocieron, las personas presentes exclamaron en la maravilla en la vista del luchador de toro, su ídolo, pie desnudo que anda con el resto. Entonces ellos recordaron su herida y su enfermedad larga y realizaron que él daba gracias por su recuperación.
